111 is an important concept in the hidden history of The Empire.
According to The American Woman, every 111 years something horrible happens to great Britain, a time cycle kept secret from the populace by whatever shadowy group or individual was responsible for cursing The Punished. The four dates in the cycle she mentioned are listed below:
In 1777, London was racked by protests and riots relating to the War in the American colonies. 1777 was a disastrous year for the British, and it is seen as the year when the war turned decisively in favor of the Americans.
In 1999, the last breath went out of the British Empire as they handed Hong Kong over to the Chinese government.
This information is clearly wrong, as the American Woman's own diary posits a slightly different interpretation- that every 111 years The Charter of the Land must be renewed and as such, the empire must make a sacrifice relating to it. In 1888 that sacrifice were the victims of the Jack the Ripper murders, specifically engineered by the Empire to fulfill the archaic requirements of the charter.
The number 111 opens the electronic locks on the restricted wing of Bedlam, an area containing the most deranged members of the Lost.
The number 111 is sometimes called "a Nelson" after Admiral Nelson, who allegedly only had "One Eye, One Arm, One Leg" near the end of his life. It is particularly known as a score in cricket. In cricket a score of 111 or multiples thereof (222 = "double nelson", 333 = "triple nelson" and so on) is considered unlucky.
